Unusual tricks from veteran pilgrims that never count

Little secrets that do not appear in the guides but that make the difference between suffering... or enjoying the Camino de Santiago

When you start the Camino de Santiago, you think you have everything under control. Backpack prepared, new boots, planned stages... and a pretty clear idea of what awaits you.

But there is something that no one tells you.

Veteran pilgrims have an advantage. Not because they are stronger... but because they know little tricks that completely change the experience. Simple details, almost invisible, but that can turn a hard day into a bearable one.

And the funny thing is that many of these tricks do not appear in any guide.

The real secret: less is more (but really)

Everyone says to carry light… but until you carry the backpack for several days you don't understand what it means.

Veterans are clear: every gram counts.

It's not just about wearing less clothes. It is eliminating everything unnecessary. Things that “just in case” you carry… and never use. They have already learned that the Camino is not a safety excursion, it is an adaptation experience.

And the lighter you go, the freer you feel.

The invisible foot trick

Here is one of the biggest secrets.

Veteran pilgrims don't wait to get blisters... they prevent them. They use Vaseline, change socks mid-stage, air their feet at every stop and, above all, listen for any slightest signal.

For them, taking care of their feet is not advice… it is a strategy.

Because on the Camino there is a very simple truth: if your feet fail, everything is over.

PILGRIM TAKING CARE OF HIS FEET

Getting up early is not posturing, it is survival

It may seem like getting up early is just a Camino fad. But it is not.

Veterans leave earlier for a clear reason: to avoid the heat, walk calmly and secure a place at the next shelter.

Plus, there's something special about walking at dawn. It is quieter, more authentic… more Camino.

And when the others start, they have already done half the day.

The social trick that no one expects

Another of the most curious secrets has nothing to do with the body, but with people.

Veteran pilgrims know when to speak… and when not to. They don't force conversations, but they don't close them either. They let everything flow.

And that's where the magic happens.

The best conversations on the Camino are not sought... they appear.

Eat well… but not how you think

Many beginners become obsessed with eating perfect, balanced or “healthy”.

Veterans have another vision: eat what the body asks for.

Sometimes it's a complete menu.
Sometimes it's a quick snack.
Sometimes... it's a cold beer that tastes better than any dish.

Because on the Camino, the body rules.

The most important mental trick

Here is the big secret that no one tells you clearly.

The Camino is not done with the legs... it is done with the head.

Veteran pilgrims do not fight fatigue. They accept it. They don't try to control everything. They adapt.

If a day is hard, it is.
If you have to stop, you stop.

That mentality changes everything.

What they don't tell you... is what matters most

In the end, the Camino de Santiago is not a list of advice. It is an experience that is learned by walking.

But these little tricks, the ones that veterans don't usually tell, are what make the difference.

They are not spectacular.
They are not epic.
But they work.

And when you discover them... you understand something important:

The Camino is not about making it perfect.
It's about learning to do better every day.
