Galicia and Cantabria strengthen cooperation between two of the great pilgrimage routes in northern Spain

The French Way and the Lebaniego Road They continue to strengthen their ties in a collaboration that seeks to enhance cultural tourism, historical heritage and pilgrimage experiences in northern Spain. The recent visit of representatives of the Commonwealth of Galician Municipalities of the French Way to Cantabria has served to consolidate a joint strategy that will allow both routes to be promoted nationally and internationally.

The cooperation between Galicia and Cantabria comes at a particularly important time for the tourism sector. Every year thousands of pilgrims from Europe, America and Asia travel the historical paths attracted by the combination of nature, culture, spirituality and gastronomy that these unique routes offer.

During the meeting, the Galician representatives were able to see some of the most emblematic places of the Camino Lebaniego, a route that connects San Vicente de la Barquera with the Monastery of Santo Toribio de Liébana, one of the most important Christian pilgrimage centers on the European continent.

The visit allowed for the exchange of experiences related to tourism promotion, signage, heritage conservation, attention to pilgrims and economic development linked to historical routes. Both delegations agreed on the importance of continuing to work together to attract visitors and generate opportunities in rural municipalities.

The French Way continues to be the main Jacobean route and one of the busiest in the world. Every season it receives hundreds of thousands of pilgrims who pass through towns full of history, monuments, churches, hostels and unique landscapes until they reach Santiago de Compostela.

For its part, the Camino Lebaniego has established itself as an alternative that is increasingly appreciated by those seeking a calmer, spiritual experience linked to nature. Its spectacular landscapes, the passage through the Picos de Europa and the arrival at Santo Toribio de Liébana make this route one of the great treasures of Spanish religious tourism.

The collaboration between both routes also aims to increase the international promotion of the routes, taking advantage of the growing interest in sustainable tourism, hiking, cultural getaways and authentic experiences that more and more travelers are seeking.

Institutional officials highlighted that the Camino not only generates economic wealth. It also contributes to keeping towns, traditions, family businesses and heritage elements that are part of the identity of each territory alive.

Rural hotels, hostels, restaurants, local businesses and tourist service companies benefit every year from the arrival of pilgrims, turning historical routes into one of the main economic drivers of many rural areas.

This alliance also acquires special relevance for the coming years, with the preparation of the future Lebaniego Jubilee Year and the continued growth of pilgrimages to Santiago de Compostela. Both communities believe that working together will allow them to offer a higher quality experience and reinforce the international prestige of their paths.

The union between the French Way and the Lebaniego Way shows that cooperation between territories can become a key tool to protect heritage, promote quality tourism and guarantee the future of two routes that are part of the history of Europe.
