The Camino becomes therapy for the elderly in Seville

Mairena del Aljarafe will take its senior centers to live the Jacobean experience

The Camino de Santiago continues to demonstrate that it does not understand ages. While thousands of young people arrive looking for adventure, digital disconnection or spiritual experiences, now the elderly also become protagonists of an initiative that unites healthy tourism, active aging and emotional well-being.

The City Council of Mairena del Aljarafe, in Seville, has announced an innovative program that will allow users of its three senior centers to complete the Camino de Santiago within a project designed to promote healthy living habits, coexistence and physical activity among the senior population.

The proposal has generated an enormous impact within the field of social tourism and the Camino de Santiago, especially because it adapts the Jacobean experience to the physical abilities of older people, betting on a formula that is increasingly in demand in Europe:
active tourism for seniors.

The mayor of Mairena del Aljarafe, Antonio Conde, explained during the presentation that the objective is to “give our elders back the protagonism they deserve” and offer them experiences that mix physical exercise, coexistence and new emotions.

The Camino as a tool for health and well-being

The initiative includes much more than a simple trip.

The City Council will previously organize specific physical preparation for the participants, in addition to all the logistics related to:
accommodation,
maintenance,
transport,
attendance,
adapted stages
and professional accompaniment during the tour.

The objective is clear:
that older people can enjoy the Camino safely and without giving up the emotional experience of walking to Santiago de Compostela.

More and more health and aging experts highlight the benefits of these types of activities for older people.

Walk,
socialize,
break routines,
do moderate exercise
and traveling in a group help enormously to improve:
mobility,
self-esteem,
mental well-being
and quality of life.

Precisely for this reason, the Camino de Santiago is also beginning to be seen as a powerful tool for emotional health and active aging.

The Senior Camino grows throughout Spain

What happened in Mairena also reflects a trend that is growing rapidly in Spain:
the rise of the senior Camino.

More and more programs appear specifically aimed at older people who want to live the Jacobean experience without facing excessively difficult stages.

Many retirees discover the Camino as a way to:
stay active,
do cultural tourism,
meet people,
and feel part of a personal challenge.

Furthermore, the senior profile has become one of the most interesting segments for rural tourism and nature tourism.

Many older people today have more free time, an interest in traveling and a desire to live different experiences away from traditional mass tourism.

And the Camino de Santiago fits perfectly into that model.

An emotional experience beyond walking

The Mairena City Council insists that the project does not only seek physical activity.

It also aims to promote coexistence and combat loneliness, one of the major problems currently affecting many older people.

During the Camino, participants will share:
stages,
conversations,
meals,
efforts
and emotional experiences that often end up creating very strong bonds between pilgrims.

Because the Camino has something special:
the group feeling,
to move forward together,
to help each other,
and to feel accompanied.

Many seniors who take Jacobean routes later claim that the experience gives them enthusiasm, energy and the desire to remain active.

Camino tourism continues to transform

The Jacobean phenomenon continues to grow in 2026 at a spectacular rate.

Every year more international pilgrims arrive interested in:
hiking,
wellness travel,
cultural tourism,
nature,
slow travel
and authentic human experiences.

And within this transformation, senior tourism appears as one of the great drivers of growth.

Especially because the Camino offers something that many travelers are looking for today:
real emotions.

Far from the rush, stress and screens, walking for several days sharing simple experiences has become authentic emotional therapy for many.

Safety and assistance throughout the experience

The Mairena program will also have permanent municipal supervision to guarantee the safety of all participants.

The stages will be adapted to the physical condition of older people and health support measures and continuous assistance will be included during the journey.

In addition, the company Sanafarmacia will collaborate by providing first aid kit material and sun protection cream for the participants.

All of this makes this initiative one of the most striking municipal programs related to the Camino in recent months.

The Camino has no age

The news once again demonstrates one of the great truths of the Camino de Santiago:
It doesn't matter how old you are to start walking.

Every year thousands of older people discover that they can still live adventures, see new places and overcome personal challenges.

Many even claim that the Camino changes their lives.

Because in the end, the Camino is not just about kilometers.

Try to feel alive.

And that doesn't mean years.
