'Peregrina': the crime that shocked the Camino de Santiago comes to Movistar Plus+
The universe of true crime Look again at the Camino de Santiago. Movistar Plus+ will premiere on May 14 Pilgrim, the new production directed by Carles Porta that reconstructs one of the most shocking and media cases that occurred on the Jacobean route in recent years: the disappearance and murder of the American pilgrim Denise Pikka Thiem in the vicinity of Astorga.

The documentary series, divided into two episodes, is part of the new season of crime chronicle productions promoted by Movistar Plus+ together with True Crime Factory and Goroka. The project promises to recover unpublished testimonies, never seen files and the story of those who lived from the inside a case that deeply shook the Camino de Santiago and the entire pilgrim community.
A case that marked the Camino de Santiago
The story dates back to April 5, 2015, when Denise Pikka Thiem, a pilgrim from the United States, disappeared while walking the Camino Frances near Astorga, in León. What initially seemed like an isolated disappearance ended up becoming an international investigation that put the media spotlight on safety on the Camino de Santiago.
For weeks, neighbors, pilgrims, volunteers and security forces participated in intense search efforts. Concern grew rapidly in both Spain and the United States, especially when US Senator John McCain publicly intervened offering FBI collaboration to assist in the investigation.
The case generated enormous international repercussion and left a deep emotional mark among hospital workers, Jacobean associations and thousands of pilgrims who travel the Santiago routes every year.
Unpublished testimonies and reconstruction of the crime
According to Movistar Plus+, Pilgrim It will feature statements from members of the Specialized and Violent Crime Unit (UDEV), experts in behavior analysis, journalists who covered the case and people who met Denise during the Camino.
In addition, the documentary will include the vision of volunteers, local residents and members of Civil Protection who actively participated in the searches, offering a very detailed reconstruction of the social and human impact that the case caused.
The production will follow three main narrative lines: the official police investigation, the citizen mobilization that was organized around the disappearance and the international media pressure that ended up elevating the case to a diplomatic level.
Carles Porta returns to the genre he dominates
With this new series, Carles Porta continues to establish himself as one of the great references of the true crime in Spanish. The Catalan journalist had previously triumphed with formats such as Crims, The crime of the Urban Guard o Light in the darkness, characterized by a sober, rigorous style focused on respect for the victims.
Movistar Plus+ has invested heavily in this type of content in recent years, and Pilgrim It is shaping up to be one of the most impressive productions of the season due to the symbolism that the Camino de Santiago has inside and outside of Spain.

The impact on the image of the Camino
Although millions of pilgrims travel the different Jacobean routes every year without incident, the Denise Pikka Thiem case opened an intense debate at the time about safety, the loneliness of some sections and the international protection of walkers.
Even so, Jacobean associations and experts remember that the Camino de Santiago continues to be one of the great cultural, spiritual and human experiences of Europe, keeping intact its ability to unite people from all over the world.
The arrival of Pilgrim Television will once again put on the table one of the hardest episodes in the recent history of the Camino, recovering the memory of a case that still remains very present among many pilgrims.
