350 Americans will be received with traditional hospitality in Navarra
The Camino de Santiago once again demonstrates that its essence goes far beyond walking. The Navarrese town of Estella is preparing to welcome around 350 pilgrims from the United States at an international meeting to be held in June 2027.
But what has really attracted attention is not the event itself.
It's how it's going to be done.
Some of these pilgrims will not sleep in hotels or hostels…
👉 They will be welcomed in private homes of neighbors
A model that recovers the purest hospitality of the Camino.
A welcome that breaks with traditional tourism
The initiative arises as an alternative to avoid the saturation of accommodation and, at the same time, reinforce the Jacobean spirit.
The neighbors themselves have responded massively.
Many have offered their homes with phrases as simple as:
“I have two beds” or “I can accommodate in one room”
A reaction that reflects something increasingly less common in today's tourism:
👉 open the house door to strangers

A historic event outside the United States
The meeting is organized by the American Pilgrims on the Camino association, the most important Jacobean association in the United States.
And it has a key piece of information:
👉 It will be the first time this event is held outside the US.
Estella has been chosen as the headquarters thanks to the relationship built in recent years between Spanish and American Camino associations.
More than walking: living the Camino
The program will not focus only on going through stages.
Includes:
- cultural activities
- music and folklore
- exchange of experiences
- visits to local heritage
The objective is clear: that pilgrims not only “do the Camino”…
👉 but that they understand it
According to the organization, many pilgrims focus only on walking and do not really get to know the places they pass through.
An experience that foreigners value more than anyone else
From the organization they highlight a curious aspect.
For many American pilgrims, being welcomed into a home is something almost impossible to imagine in their culture.
Therefore, this experience has enormous value.
It's not just accommodation.
It is integration.
It is real coexistence.
And that, according to the organizers, is what impacts the most.
The Camino as a bridge between cultures
This meeting is not coincidental.
It is part of a relationship that has been strengthening in recent years between Estella and international pilgrims.
Similar meetings had already been organized since 2023, generating personal ties that are still active today
To the point that some pilgrims repeat their visit every year.

A model that sends a clear message
At a time when the Camino is growing in number of pilgrims and also in tourist pressure, what happens in Estella sends a powerful message:
👉 the Camino does not need more hotels
👉 needs more humanity
While at other points there is debate about massification, management or business...
Here it goes back to basics.
Open a house.
Share a table.
Welcome those who arrive.
The Camino that many fear losing… is still alive
What is happening in Estella contrasts with other recent news on the Camino, where associations denounce the loss of the traditional model.
Here the opposite happens.
It is reinforced.
It protects itself.
And it shows that there are still places where the Camino remains what it always was.
An example that can mark the future
Estella's experience could become a reference.
Not because of its size.
But because of his approach.
Because remember something fundamental:
👉 the Camino is not just infrastructure
👉 is welcomed
And that is not built with money.
