A 59-year-old man collapses in O Milladoiro after an illness

A British pilgrim died this Friday after suffering an illness when he was a few kilometers from Santiago de Compostela, on the final stretch of the Camino de Santiago as it passed through the town of Or Milladoiro.

The event took place in the early afternoon, between 2:30 p.m. and 3:00 p.m., on Rúa do Veado, an area near the exit of the Noia highway and one of the usual accesses to the Galician capital. The 59-year-old man was walking towards Santiago when he began to feel unwell.

A collapse in the middle of the Camino de Santiago

According to the first information, the pilgrim suddenly felt unwell while advancing along this section of the Camino. Eyewitnesses alerted the emergency services when they saw the man collapse on a public road.

The area where the incident occurred is a frequent crossing point for pilgrims approaching Santiago, especially in the last kilometers of the route, when accumulated fatigue and physical effort can take their toll.

The health services rushed to the scene after receiving the warning, but could do nothing to save the pilgrim's life.

The last stretch before Santiago, one of the most demanding

Although the end of the Camino de Santiago is usually experienced with emotion due to the proximity to the finish line, it is also one of the most delicate moments for many pilgrims.

After days or weeks of effort, the body accumulates fatigue, which can increase the risk of suffering physical problems, especially in people with previous pathologies or in conditions of heat, dehydration or overexertion.

Access to Santiago through O Milladoiro is one of the key points in this last stage, used by thousands of pilgrims every year.

An increasingly international profile on the Camino

The deceased, of British nationality, reflects the international character of the Camino de Santiago, which attracts pilgrims from all over the world every year.

In recent years, the number of walkers from the United Kingdom, Germany and the United States has increased significantly, consolidating the Camino as one of the main destinations for active and spiritual tourism in Europe.

This international profile also implies the need to reinforce information on safety, health and physical preparation before starting the pilgrimage.

The importance of prevention on the Camino de Santiago

These types of events, although infrequent, highlight the importance of taking precautions when traveling the Camino.

Experts recommend to pilgrims:

  • Carry out prior physical preparation
  • Maintain proper hydration
  • Adapt the rhythm of the stages
  • Consult a doctor if you have health problems
  • Listen to your body and stop if you have any symptoms.

The Camino de Santiago is not a race, and each pilgrim must adapt the route to their physical conditions.

Emergencies on the Road: quick response but not always enough

The Camino de Santiago has relatively well-organized emergency systems, especially in areas near cities like Santiago.

However, in cases of cardiorespiratory arrest or serious health problems, the speed of intervention does not always guarantee a favorable outcome.

The combination of physical effort, age and external conditions can be decisive.

A reminder of the real demands of the Camino

Although the Camino de Santiago is often associated with a spiritual and cultural experience, we must not forget that it involves considerable physical effort.

Long stages, temperature changes, unevenness and accumulation of fatigue make the route a demanding activity.

This event reminds us that, beyond its symbolic value, the Camino requires preparation and prudence.

Impact between pilgrims and residents of the area

The death of the pilgrim has generated an impact both among other walkers and among the residents of O Milladoiro, accustomed to the constant passage of pilgrims but not to this type of situation.

Many pilgrims who were in the area at that time were affected by what happened, in a section where there is normally excitement due to the proximity to Santiago.

Conclusion: the Camino, between emotion and responsibility

The Camino de Santiago continues to be one of the most important experiences for thousands of people each year, but it also demands responsibility.

Cases like this remind us that preparation, prudence and attention to health are essential to complete the route safely.

Getting to Santiago is the goal, but doing so in good conditions must always be the priority.
