A German pilgrim has died while walking the Camino de Santiago while passing through the province of Burgos. The event occurred in San Juan de Ortega, one of the most emblematic historical places of the French Way.
According to information published by Burgos media, the pilgrim was in the local hostel when the death occurred. At the moment, it is not advisable to attribute a specific cause until there is official confirmation about the circumstances of death.
San Juan de Ortega is one of the most recognizable enclaves of the Jacobean route in Burgos. The small town, belonging to the municipality of Barrios de Colina, maintains a very close historical connection with the reception of pilgrims. The refuge is part of the monastery complex and continues to be one of the traditional resting points before facing the stage towards Burgos.

The French Way crosses this area after Belorado and before continuing towards Agés, Atapuerca and finally Burgos, in a stage of just over 25 kilometers from San Juan de Ortega to the capital of Burgos.
The news leaves a new sad day on the Camino de Santiago and once again reminds us that behind the numbers of pilgrims there are thousands of personal stories, trips and families that wait on the other side of each pilgrimage.
From RTV Camino de Santiago We convey our memory to the deceased pilgrim and our condolences to his family and close people.
Buen Camino, wherever it continues.
