Scouts from Galicia and Portugal create a network towards Santiago

Scouts from Galicia and northern Portugal have presented to the Archbishop of Santiago several initiatives to facilitate the pilgrimage of scout groups to Compostela, including a specific guide to the Camino, a future network of hostels and new routes shared between both territories.

The Camino de Santiago can become a new tool for unity between young people from Galicia and Portugal.

Representatives of Scouts of Galicia – Galician Catholic Scouting and of National Corps of Shields of Viana do Castelo They met this Saturday with the Archbishop of Santiago, Francisco José Prieto Fernández, to present different projects aimed at strengthening collaboration between both communities.

The meeting was part of the Nortada Project, a twinning initiative that seeks to strengthen the links between Galician and Portuguese Catholic scouting and create new experiences linked to the Camino de Santiago.

A scout guide to do the Camino

One of the most interesting projects is the creation of a guide or manual designed specifically for scout groups that want to make a pilgrimage to Santiago.

The publication would include practical information about shelters, spaces where you can stay or camp, and useful resources to prepare the stages.

The idea is that young people can live the Camino from their own scout identity, combining the experience of walking with coexistence, education in values and the spiritual dimension.

It is also contemplated to include prayers and content related to group life.

A future network of scout hostels

The guide would be directly related to another of the proposals presented to the archbishop: the creation of a scout hostel network.

The objective would be to provide reception spaces for groups that travel the Jacobean routes.

Having a coordinated network would make it possible to better prepare pilgrimages, organize large groups and offer places adapted to the needs of young and responsible people.

The proposal is still in the development phase, but it could become a particularly useful tool to encourage new youth pilgrimages.

Galicia and Portugal, also united by the Camino

The project also has a strong cross-border dimension.

During the twinning days, new shared routes and activities were proposed between Galicia and the north of Portugal.

The program even included a symbolic border crossing between Valença and Tui, two towns deeply linked to the Portuguese Way.

The gesture well represents the spirit of the project: using the Camino as a meeting space between communities on both sides of the Miño.

Composcout, a common badge

Among the initiatives there is also Composcout, a common commemorative insignia related to the days.

The proposal seeks to reinforce the shared identity between the participants and leave a tangible memory of this collaboration.

The meeting's working tables also addressed issues of pedagogical coordination, joint activities and proposals accessible to different groups.

The Camino as an educational tool

The scout movement has numerous points of connection with the experience of the Camino de Santiago.

Walk.

Share.

Sleep in community.

Learn to orient yourself.

Help your partner.

Know the territory.

Accept the effort.

They are elements that are part of both the pilgrim tradition and scout education.

Therefore, using the Camino as an educational space can offer new possibilities to work on values such as coexistence, responsibility and service.

A gift with a special meaning

During the meeting with the archbishop, the scout representatives also presented a heart-shaped decorative piece.

The object had a particularly emotional component, since children with disabilities linked to an institution had participated in its painting.

The gift symbolized working together and the value of building projects where people with different abilities can participate.

The pilgrimage will end before the Apostle

The twinning days will conclude this Sunday with the participation of the Galician-Portuguese delegation in the Pilgrim's Mass at the Cathedral of Santiago.

During the celebration, an offering and invocation to the Apostle is planned in the name of Catholic scouting on both sides of the Miño.

It will be the symbolic closing of a meeting that aims to continue beyond this weekend.

Young people for the future of the Camino

The Camino de Santiago faces numerous future challenges.

Massification.

Conservation of heritage.

Hospitality.

Generational relief.

Education.

In this context, initiatives that bring the Camino closer to children and young people can have special value.

It is not just about getting new pilgrims.

It is about new generations knowing the historical, cultural and human significance of the Jacobean routes.

The future scout guide, the network of hostels and the shared routes between Galicia and Portugal point precisely in that direction.

Because the future of the Camino also depends on those who are beginning to discover it today.
