Accident Near the End of the Camino de Santiago Raises Safety Concerns

Two Portuguese pilgrims, one of them a minor, were seriously injured after being struck by a car in the center of Santiago de Compostela, just a short distance from the final destination of the Camino de Santiago.

The accident occurred on Rosalía de Castro Street, near the Church of Santa Susana, an area frequently used by both local residents and pilgrims arriving in the city after completing their journey. According to initial reports, an elderly driver lost control of his vehicle, mounted the sidewalk, and hit the two pilgrims before crashing into street furniture and the facade of a nearby building.

Emergency services arrived quickly at the scene and provided immediate medical assistance. Both victims were transferred to the University Clinical Hospital of Santiago, where they remain in serious condition.

Investigation Underway

Local authorities have launched an investigation to determine the exact cause of the accident. Early indications suggest that the driver may have suffered a sudden medical episode or loss of consciousness before losing control of the vehicle.

The driver was also treated by emergency personnel after reportedly suffering an anxiety attack following the incident.

Police officers are reviewing all available evidence and witness statements as they work to establish the circumstances surrounding the crash.

Shock Among the Pilgrim Community

The incident has caused considerable concern among the international Camino community. Every year, hundreds of thousands of pilgrims from around the world travel to Santiago de Compostela, with many completing their final kilometers through busy urban areas shared with vehicle traffic.

Pilgrim associations have expressed their support for the injured women and their families while also highlighting the importance of road safety measures in urban sections of the Camino de Santiago.

Although the Camino is widely regarded as one of the safest pilgrimage routes in the world, the accident has renewed discussions about protecting pilgrims during the final stages of their journey, particularly in areas with significant vehicle movement.

A Journey Interrupted

For the two Portuguese pilgrims, what should have been a moment of celebration near the end of their pilgrimage turned into a tragic event. Messages of support have already begun circulating among pilgrims and Camino organizations across Spain and Portugal.

The Camino de Santiago is built on values of solidarity, community, and mutual support. As news of the accident spreads, many pilgrims are hoping for the full recovery of the two women and for answers regarding the circumstances that led to the crash.
