A new medical device in the heart of Santiago promises to improve assistance and guarantee safety for two more important years on the road.
The Caminho de Santiago continues to grow and, with the arrival of Xacobeo 2027, Galiza has begun to prepare to receive a historic number of pilgrims.
One of the most important measures announced is the creation of a special health plan, specifically designed to serve the thousands of walkers who travel to Santiago de Compostela every day.
Rather than a point-in-time measure, it is a clear strategy: taking better care of the way you walk.
Medical assistance in the heart of the road
The plan includes the installation of a health care point in Praça do Obradoiro, the place where all the pilgrims finish their day.
In this space it will be possible to receive a first medical evaluation, treat injuries, stabilize patients and, if necessary, route them to the public health system.
The idea is simpler, more powerful: guarantee that any pilgrim has immediate assistance at the most important moment of the journey.
A reinforced device for the Holy Year
Or Xacobeo 2027 It will be a special year, and by this plan it will include an extraordinary reinforcement of two services.
It will have more professionals, longer hours and additional structures, such as medical stores, to respond to the expected increase in pilgrims.
Additionally, a specific contingency plan will be activated for common road situations, such as dehydration, heat stroke or collective emergencies.
A collaboration that has shown results
This project has not started from scratch. The collaboration between emergency services and specialized entities does not support pilgrims and has existed for several years and has demonstrated good results.
In previous experiences, most of the care was resolved not at the local level, without the need for hospital routing, or that shows the effectiveness of this type of device.
