A long and very varied path
The Camino de Invierno is one of the longest and most complete routes to reach Santiago from the northwest of the peninsula. It begins in Ponferrada and crosses the regions of León, Valdeorras, the Ribeira Sacra and the interior of Ourense before joining the Camino Sanabrés in A Laxe.
It is a demanding route in some sections, but also very grateful, with changing landscapes and stages that combine mountains, valleys, rivers and rarely traveled rural areas.
Long stages and open landscapes in Bierzo
The first days from Ponferrada are usually comfortable, with wide roads and towns where it is easy to find services. The passage through Las Médulas is one of the most spectacular moments of the Camino, with its reddish formations and trails that cross a unique landscape.
As you advance towards Galicia, the terrain changes and longer and more solitary stages appear. There are sections where the pilgrim walks for kilometers between mountains and vineyards, with few intermediate towns, which requires planning well for water and breaks.
The Ribeira Sacra, one of the most impressive stretches
The passage through the Ribeira Sacra is, for many pilgrims, the best part of the Winter Way. The viewpoints over the Sil River, the terraced vineyards and the paths that wind between mountains make this part of the tour especially memorable.
The stages here usually have unevenness and require taking them slowly. It is not a Camino to run or to cover long distances without preparation. The pace is usually calm, enjoying the landscape and silence.

The interior of Ourense and the link to Santiago
After leaving the Sil canyons behind, the Camino becomes gentler, alternating forest tracks, local roads and rural trails. The landscape is still very natural, with small villages and a very authentic atmosphere.
In A Laxe the Camino de Invierno joins the Camino Sanabrés, and from there there are still several days to Santiago, with comfortable and well-marked stages.
A Path for those seeking tranquility
The Winter Road is not the busiest nor the easiest, but those who walk it usually agree on the same thing: it is one of the most beautiful and authentic. The absence of large crowds, the open landscapes and the feeling of walking for hours in silence make it a very special experience.
It is a Camino to enjoy without rushing, to walk calmly and to feel that each stage is part of a long and deep journey towards Compostela.
