Sensational. The Camino de Santiago. The forgotten book of 1965
The Xunta de Galicia has promoted the reissue of The Camino de Santiago. The forgotten book of 1965, a work by Álvaro Cunqueiro that offers a unique vision of the Jacobean route through the eyes of one of the great authors of Galician literature. The presentation of the book took place this afternoon at the Casa de Galicia in Madrid, in an event that was attended by the director of Tourism of Galicia, Xosé Merelles, and the director of the House of Galicia, Luis Y. Ramos.
The Camino de Santiago. The forgotten book of 1965
During his speech, Merelles highlighted the historical and cultural relevance of the Camino de Santiago, which has mobilized thousands of pilgrims over the centuries and has promoted the economic and territorial development of the regions it passes through. In this sense, he highlighted that Cunqueiro's work, originally published in 1965 on the occasion of the Holy Year of that year, was key to disseminating the Jacobean pilgrimage and reinforcing its not only religious, but also cultural and touristic character.
The director of Tourism of Galicia recalled that, at that time, the celebration of the Holy Year promoted important improvements on the Camino de Santiago, including the restoration of monuments and the creation of welcoming infrastructure for pilgrims, including the first facility of this type in Santiago de Compostela. Thus, Cunqueiro's work contributed to reorienting the motivation of pilgrims, adding new reasons of a cultural and heritage nature to the traditional pilgrimage.
