Triacastela celebrates the pilgrim: festival, tradition and the Camino

The town of Lugo is preparing for a day especially linked to the Camino de Santiago, with the Festa do Peregrino and the traditional celebration in honor of San Mamede.

Triacastela will once again make the pilgrim one of the great protagonists of its festive calendar. This Monday August 17, the town located on the French Way will celebrate a new edition of the Pilgrim Festival, coinciding with the traditional celebrations in honor of San Mamede, a date deeply rooted in the municipality.

This is not just any festival on the calendar of a Galician town. Triacastela lives daily to the rhythm of the boots, backpacks and walking sticks of those who advance towards Santiago de Compostela, and this celebration is a way of recognizing precisely those people who cross the municipality from numerous countries.

A party in one of the emblematic places of the French Way

Triacastela's relationship with the Jacobean pilgrimage goes back centuries. The town is one of the historical points of the French Way and continues to be a reference for thousands of walkers today, especially after the demanding passage through O Cebreiro and before continuing towards Samos or Sarria.

There is even an ancient tradition linked to the stones of Triacastela: pilgrims collected limestone from the area to transport it to Castañeda, where the lime used in the works of the Cathedral of Santiago was prepared. The current Pilgrim Monument remembers that particular historical connection between the municipality and the Compostela construction.

The Festa do Peregrino now reinforces that identity. The day will combine the Jacobean component with the celebration of San Mamede, whose pilgrimage is traditionally celebrated every August 17. The tourist information of the area includes this date as one of the traditions that is worth knowing for those who cross Triacastela during the Camino.

Triacastela Pilgrim Festival

Music, gastronomy and festive atmosphere

The planned program includes religious events and festive activities, with music and gastronomy forming part of a day designed for both residents and those who are doing the Camino de Santiago these days.

In addition, August 17 has added importance this year: It is a local holiday in Triacastela in 2026, which will allow the celebration to become one of the outstanding events of this final stretch of the summer.

For many pilgrims it will be a surprise. They will leave in the morning thinking only of completing a new stage and they will be able to find a town in full celebration. It is precisely one of those experiences that are impossible to program and end up being part of the memories of the Camino.

The Camino is also built in its towns

Celebrations like the one in Triacastela show a dimension of the Camino that goes far beyond completing kilometers to Compostela. The small towns on the Jacobean routes are a fundamental part of the experience: they preserve traditions, offer hospitality and keep alive a heritage that pilgrims get to know as they advance.

This August 17, Triacastela will remember it again by simultaneously celebrating its tradition and those who arrive on foot.

And perhaps there is no better tribute to the pilgrim than to make him feel, even for a few hours, that he is also part of the town he passes through.
