The transformation of one of the most dangerous roads in the world
There was a time when the Caminito del Rey It was not a tourist route.
It was a risk.
A challenge.
And for many... crazy.
Located in the Gaitanes Gorge, in Malaga, this narrow pass hanging more than 100 meters high was born at the beginning of the 20th century as an infrastructure for workers at hydroelectric plants.
It was not intended for tourists.
Not even for hikers.
Not even for Instagram photos.
But time changed everything.

From technical path… to dangerous ruin
As the years went by, the Caminito became abandoned.
The walkways fell into disrepair.
The railings disappeared.
And in many sections... there was simply no ground.
Just beams.
Just empty.
In the 90s, his condition was so extreme that he earned a title that follows him to this day:
👉 “the most dangerous road in the world”
It was not an exaggeration.
There were fatal accidents.
Several hikers lost their lives trying to cross it, especially in the late 1990s and early 2000s.
The consequence was inevitable.

Total closure: the myth grows
In 2000, the authorities decided to close access.
They even demolished parts of the beginning to prevent people from entering.
Did it work?
No.
👉 People kept coming in
Climbing.
Jumping.
Taking risks.
The more prohibited… the more famous.
El Caminito stopped being just a place.
He became a legend.
The great transformation
Everything changed in 2015.
After years of neglect and media pressure, a complete rehabilitation of the route was carried out.
A new walkway was built:
- safe
- stable
- accessible
But keeping the essence:
👉 walk hanging on the rock
Today, the route has about 3 kilometers of walkways, with sections more than 100 meters above the river.
The difference is clear:
Before: extreme risk
Now: controlled experience

From danger to tourist phenomenon
What was once a clandestine route... today is one of the greatest tourist attractions in Andalusia.
Millions of people have already passed through the Caminito since its reopening.
And its impact has been brutal.
👉 It has revitalized the entire area
👉 It has generated employment
👉 Rural tourism has multiplied
It is estimated that it has generated hundreds of millions of euros in the local economy in just a decade.
The success of what almost disappeared
The case of Caminito del Rey is curious.
Because its current success is born from its dangerous past.
People don't just go for a walk.
You will feel:
👉 height
👉 vertigo
👉 story
But without dying in the attempt.
That balance between adrenaline and safety is what has made it an icon.
A symbol of the new tourism
El Caminito represents something bigger.
A clear trend:
👉 transform extreme places into accessible experiences
Today it is not necessary to be a climber.
Not even an expert.
Not even unconscious.
Just book a ticket… and walk.
Yes indeed:
- with helmet
- with control
- and with access limits
Is it still dangerous?
Not like before.
But it's not just any walk either.
The height is still there.
The environment is impressive.
And the feeling of emptiness… real.
What has changed is control.
Risk is no longer the protagonist.
From madness to example
The Caminito del Rey is today an example of how to recover a forgotten space.
How to turn a problem into an opportunity.
And above all...
How something that was a symbol of danger
It can become a symbol of tourism.
A clear lesson
What used to kill...
Today it gives life to a region.
And that is no coincidence.
It's management.
It is investment.
And it is understanding the value of what you have.
