The Vía de la Plata: the most authentic Camino de Santiago

A different trip to Santiago between history, silence and emotion

To talk about the Vía de la Plata is to talk about one of the most impressive, historical and human routes in the Jacobean universe. While thousands of pilgrims fill the best-known routes every year, this Camino still preserves something that many seek and few find: authenticity, tranquility and a deep connection with the territory, the people and oneself.

The Vía de la Plata is not simply a pilgrimage route. It is an experience of personal transformation. A long, intense and emotional journey that crosses Spain from south to north between infinite landscapes, historic towns, traditional gastronomy and kilometers of silence that end up becoming an internal conversation.

More and more national and international pilgrims discover this itinerary as a perfect alternative to live the true spirit of the Camino de Santiago away from the crowds and rapid tourism.

The historical origin of the Vía de la Plata

The Vía de la Plata has ancient roots. Its main route comes from old Roman roads used to connect the south and north of the Iberian Peninsula. For centuries it was used by merchants, soldiers, travelers and later by pilgrims walking to Santiago de Compostela.

Today, this Jacobean route crosses some of the most monumental cities in Spain, offering a unique mix of cultural heritage, nature, rural tourism and spirituality.

The classic route begins in Seville and crosses communities such as Extremadura, Castilla y León and Galicia, although many pilgrims start from other intermediate points depending on the time available or their physical preparation.

Walking along the Vía de la Plata is walking through centuries of history.

A route for those seeking the authentic Camino

Many pilgrims agree on the same thing after finishing this adventure: the Vía de la Plata changes people.

There are not many crowds or large organized groups here. The pilgrim usually walks for hours surrounded by pastures, rural roads, old Roman bridges and small towns where there is still sincere and close hospitality.

The feeling of adventure is much more intense than on other Jacobean routes.

There are long stages, changing weather and days where the mind plays as important a role as the legs. Precisely for this reason many consider that this route represents the purest essence of the Camino de Santiago.

Human contact also takes on another value. Meetings between pilgrims tend to be deeper and more personal. Here conversations start slowly, around a simple dinner, an early coffee or a shared vial.

Landscapes that surprise at every stage

One of the great treasures of the Vía de la Plata is its enormous variety of landscapes.

The Camino crosses the Andalusian plains, the Extremadura pastures, forests, mountains, agricultural roads and towns where time seems to have stopped.

There are sunrises that remain recorded forever.

Especially exciting are the stages through Extremadura, where the silence of the landscape and the immensity of the environment create a sensation that is difficult to explain in words.

Monumental cities such as Seville, Mérida, Cáceres, Salamanca and Zamora also stand out, authentic jewels of Spanish historical heritage that turn the tour into a first-class cultural experience.

Many international pilgrims are surprised by the enormous tourist and cultural potential of this route.

Preparation is important

Although the Vía de la Plata is accessible to many profiles of pilgrims, it is advisable to face it with some physical and mental preparation.

The distances between towns can be wide and there are stages with few services, especially outside of high season. That is why it is advisable to plan each day well, check accommodations and bring the appropriate material.

Good footwear, a balanced backpack and correct hydration are essential.

It is also important to adapt the pace to the body and not obsess over kilometers. The Vía de la Plata teaches precisely that: walking slowly is also moving forward.

Many pilgrims claim that this Camino helps reduce stress, disconnect from daily pressure and regain emotional balance. For this reason, more and more people are looking for this type of experiential and wellness tourism.

Gastronomy, culture and rural tourism

Another of the great attractions of this route is its gastronomic wealth.

During the tour it is possible to enjoy traditional products such as Iberian ham, artisan cheeses, crumbs, sausages, local wines and recipes linked to the rural world.

The Vía de la Plata also represents an important opportunity for sustainable tourism and the economic development of small towns that find the Camino a source of life, visitors and cultural activity.

Many rural accommodations, bars, shops and small businesses survive thanks to the constant passage of pilgrims for much of the year.

The Camino generates economy, employment and social movement in areas where depopulation continues to be one of the great challenges.

An experience that goes far beyond walking

Those who take the Vía de la Plata usually return different.

The initial motivation does not matter. Some start for sport, others for tourism, others for personal or spiritual reasons. But almost everyone agrees on one thing when they finish: the Camino ends up leaving its mark.

The slowness, the human encounters, the digital disconnection, the physical effort and living with oneself end up turning the experience into something much deeper than a simple vacation.

In a time marked by haste, social networks and constant noise, routes like the Vía de la Plata remind us of the value of walking without having to run.

And perhaps that is precisely where its magic lies.

The Vía de la Plata continues to conquer pilgrims in 2026

International interest in the Jacobean routes continues to grow and the Vía de la Plata is positioned as one of the favorite options for those looking for a less crowded and more human Camino.

Every year there is an increase in the number of pilgrims who decide to discover this historic route, attracted by its heritage, its authenticity and the feeling of freedom it conveys.

The Vía de la Plata is not the easiest Way.

But precisely for that reason, for many, it ends up being the most unforgettable.
