The Puerta de Abades welcomes visitors again throughout August, improving access to one of the world’s most important pilgrimage sites
The reopening of this traditional entrance comes as thousands of pilgrims and tourists continue to reach the end of the Camino de Santiago, making August one of the months with the highest number of visitors to the Galician capital.

Located on the northern side of the Cathedral, the Puerta de Abades has played an important role throughout the building’s long history. Although it normally remains closed to the public, it is periodically reopened during times of high visitor numbers to make access easier and reduce congestion around the main entrances.
The measure will allow pilgrims to enter and leave the Cathedral more comfortably while helping distribute visitor traffic throughout the historic monument.
For many pilgrims, crossing the Cathedral doors represents the emotional climax of their journey. After hundreds of kilometres on foot or by bicycle, entering the Basilica is often described as one of the most unforgettable moments of the entire pilgrimage.
The reopening of the Puerta de Abades is expected to improve that experience by providing more convenient access during the busiest weeks of the summer season.
Cathedral officials regularly adapt visitor management according to the expected number of pilgrims and tourists, balancing the preservation of this UNESCO World Heritage monument with the need to offer a welcoming experience for everyone arriving in Santiago.
As international interest in the Way of St. James continues to grow, measures such as reopening historic entrances help ensure that visitors can enjoy one of Christianity’s most important pilgrimage destinations safely and comfortably.
For pilgrims reaching the end of their journey this August, walking through the Puerta de Abades will offer another opportunity to experience a unique part of the Cathedral’s rich history while celebrating the completion of their pilgrimage.
