The Puerta de Abades welcomes visitors again throughout August, improving access to one of the world's most important pilgrimage sites
Santiago de Compostela – This summer, arriving pilgrims will be able to enter the cathedral through Puerta de Abades.
The measure seeks to improve the flow of visitors during one of the busiest periods.
The reopening of this traditional entrance comes as thousands of pilgrims and tourists continue to reach the end of the Camino de Santiago, making August one of the months with the highest number of visitors to the Galician capital.

Located on the northern side of the Cathedral, the Abades Gate has played an important role throughout the building's long history. Although it normally remains closed to the public, it is periodically reopened during times of high visitor numbers to make access easier and reduce congestion around the main entrances.
The measure will allow pilgrims to enter and leave the Cathedral more comfortably while helping distribute visitor traffic throughout the historic monument.
Every summer, the Cathedral of Santiago receives tens of thousands of visitors from all over the world. In addition, many arrive after completing sections of the French Way, the Portuguese Way and the Northern Way. Some arrive after completing these routes to see the Apostle's tomb.
Likewise, others have followed the Via Primitiva or other pilgrimage routes. These routes lead to the tomb of the Apostle, the final destination. In addition, the arrival of walkers marks the life of the temple every summer. Those who cross the square appreciate the hospitality and the silence that surrounds the visit.
For many pilgrims, crossing the Cathedral doors represents the emotional climax of their journey. After hundreds of kilometers on foot or by bicycle, entering the Basilica is often described as one of the most unforgettable moments of the entire pilgrimage.
The reopening of the Puerta de Abades is expected to improve that experience by providing more convenient access during the busiest weeks of the summer season.
Cathedral officials regularly adapt visitor management according to the expected number of pilgrims and tourists, balancing the preservation of this UNESCO World Heritage monument with the need to offer a welcoming experience for everyone arriving in Santiago.
The Cathedral continues to be the spiritual heart of the Camino de Santiago.
It attracts hundreds of thousands of pilgrims every year from more than one hundred countries.
As international interest in the Way of St. James Continues to grow, measures such as reopening historic entrances help ensure that visitors can enjoy one of Christianity's most important pilgrimage destinations safely and comfortably.
For pilgrims reaching the end of their journey this August, walking through the Abades Gate will offer another opportunity to experience a unique part of the Cathedral's rich history while celebrating the completion of their pilgrimage.
