Castrojeriz, history, medieval essence and Jacobean soul

History, wine and the Camino de Santiago go hand in hand in one of the most emblematic towns of Burgos

Located in the province of Castrojeriz, this historic municipality is consolidated as one of the most authentic enclaves in the Camino de Santiago as it passes through the Castilian plateau. Far from being a simple transit point, Castrojeriz offers travelers a complete experience where heritage, wine tradition and spirituality coexist in balance.

With an elongated urban layout, marked by the course of the Camino, the town surprises with the richness of its monumental legacy. Churches such as the collegiate church of Nuestra Señora del Manzano, old pilgrim hospitals and emblazoned houses remind us of the strategic and spiritual importance that Castrojeriz had during the Middle Ages. Dominating the landscape from above, the ruins of its castle offer one of the most recognizable views of the Jacobean route on the plateau.

The natural environment is another of its great values. Surrounded by cereal fields and gentle hills, the landscape transmits a feeling of calm that many pilgrims point out as one of the most introspective moments of the Camino. Here, silence weighs as much as history, and each step seems to be in step with centuries of hiking tradition.

Castrojeriz also maintains a close link with the wine culture. Integrated in a region with a long agricultural tradition, the municipality is committed to leisurely tourism that highlights local products, traditional gastronomy and know-how passed down from generation to generation. Artisanal breads, spoon dishes and local wines are part of an offer that completes the traveler's experience.

In recent years, the municipality has reinforced its commitment to sustainable tourism, focused on the conservation of heritage and the close reception of both pilgrims and cultural visitors. Hostels, small accommodations and services designed for rest make Castrojeriz a strategic stop for those traveling the French Way.

Castrojeriz is not just history or just landscape. It is a living memory of the Camino de Santiago, a place where the past continues to dialogue with the present and where each visitor finds, almost without looking for it, a reason to stop a little longer.
