Urges Pilgrims: “Please Don't Abandon Dogs on the Camino”

Growing concern over pets being left behind along the Camino de Santiago

The Camino de Santiago welcomes hundreds of thousands of pilgrims every year, but not all stories that emerge from the famous pilgrimage routes have happy endings. An animal shelter in Tui, one of the main starting points of the Portuguese Way, has issued an urgent appeal asking pilgrims not to abandon their dogs during the journey.

According to the shelter, animals are occasionally found wandering alone along Camino routes, often tired, confused, and far from home. In many cases, volunteers and animal welfare organizations must step in to provide food, shelter, and veterinary care while attempting to locate the owners.

Walking the Camino with a Dog Requires Planning

More pilgrims than ever are choosing to walk the Camino de Santiago with their dogs. The growing popularity of pet-friendly accommodations, special services for pilgrims with animals, and even canine Camino credentials has made the experience increasingly accessible.

However, animal welfare experts warn that not every dog is physically prepared for the demands of a long-distance pilgrimage. Factors such as age, health conditions, weather, and the difficulty of certain stages can make the journey challenging for some pets.

For this reason, organizations recommend careful preparation before setting out on the Camino, including veterinary check-ups, proper equipment, and realistic planning of daily distances.

A Problem That Continues to Worry Animal Welfare Groups

Animal protection groups in Galicia have been raising awareness about pet abandonment for years. During the pilgrimage season, some shelters report finding dogs near hostels, rest areas, and popular Camino routes.

The shelter in Tui stresses that most pilgrims act responsibly, but even a small number of abandonment cases can have serious consequences for the animals involved. Many dogs struggle to survive alone and depend on the intervention of volunteers and local residents.

The True Spirit of the Camino

Organizations linked to both the Camino de Santiago and animal welfare believe that the values of the pilgrimage—respect, solidarity, responsibility, and compassion—should also extend to animals.

The shelter's message is simple: if a dog starts the Camino with its owner, it should also finish the journey with them.

As thousands of pilgrims continue their journey toward Santiago de Compostela, animal welfare advocates hope this appeal will help raise awareness and ensure that every four-legged companion receives the care and commitment it deserves.
