The Most Dangerous Fauna of the Camino: The Garbage Pilgrim
The Camino de Santiago is an experience of introspection, brotherhood and, for many, a spiritual retreat. However, in recent weeks, Seprona guards and hospital workers have been warning about a threat that does not come from the dreaded blisters, but from a much more harmful specimen: the «Trash Pilgrim» (Homo desechus caminus).
This type of walker, whose trail is as unmistakable as his rubber footprint on the Earth, is rewriting the genetic code of the Jacobean route, transforming the idyllic Galician and Castilian landscapes into a strange medley of plastics and packaging.

The Habitat of Homo-Desechus
The Garbage Pilgrim does not need a credential, but he does need large quantities of packaging. Its main territory brands are:
- The Bermuda Triangle of Plastics: It is located just before the trash can, at a distance of about 50 centimeters. It is a magical area where water bottles (Aquarius peregrinus) and beer cans (Finalis Beer) mysteriously lose the ability to fly to their final destination.
- The Energy Bar Trail: They leave a trail of fluorescent-colored wrappings that, according to experts, serve to guide the next flock. It has been documented that the taste of a bar consumed at 15 km/h first thing in the morning completely inhibits the fine motor skills of the fingers to fold the wrapper.
- The Socks Fossils: One of the most perverse contributions of this species are the socks abandoned at the foot of fountains or, worse still, hanging from trees like strange flags of surrender. Not only do they attack aesthetics, but, in the words of a Galician hostel, "they smell like original sin and camphor".
The Law of Least Resistance
Why does this phenomenon occur? The sociologists of the Camino have coined the «Pilgrim's Law of Minimum Resistance». This postulates that, for every kilometer traveled, the willpower required to carry an empty container decreases exponentially, reaching point zero right next to a beautiful stream or a century-old stone wall.
"The Rubbish Pilgrim feels that he has already done enough for humanity by walking 25 kilometers with just one pair of feet," explains the hospitable Manolo ironically, picking up a potato tortilla wrapper. «You will believe that carrying a banana peel in your backpack is an attack on your spine. The backpack, at this point in the trip, should only carry dreams and hydroalcoholic gel.
Deterrent (and Ridiculous) Measures
Faced with this crisis, the Friends of the Camino associations are considering taking drastic measures that range from the educational to the openly comical:
- The "Cargo of Guilt": Force the repeat Trash Pilgrim to carry a backpack containing all the trash accumulated from the previous day.
- The “Selfie Fine”: Impose a financial penalty for each selfie taken next to a yellow arrow, unless the background is visibly free of plastics.
- Musical Penance: In hostels, the offender will be forced to listen to the same medieval lullaby on loop until the last residue has been sorted.
Meanwhile, the yellow arrow will continue to indicate the path to Santiago. We only hope that, over time, the arrow's message will expand to include: "Go on, and take your trash, please." The Apostle and the wildlife will thank you.
