The Major "Guides" of the Camino: Wisdom, and Where there is NO Bar
Ah, the people of the Camino de Santiago! Small jewels embedded in the path, where time seems to dilute like the sweat of a pilgrim in August. But if there is something that gives a unique flavor to each village, it is its inhabitants. And, without disparaging anyone, we have to talk about them: our elders, the real ones «influencers» del Camino, long before Instagram existed!
You arrive dragging your belongings, with that lost look of someone who has been looking at the shoe for hours, and suddenly, a figure appears on the threshold of a stone house. It could be a grandmother knitting, a man pruning his vines or someone simply "watching life go by" from a bench. And that's where the magic begins.
With a look that has seen a thousand springs pass by and many other pilgrims (some lame, others singing, most sweating), they give you the first pearl: «Buen Camino, son/daughter! Come on, there's nothing left for you…” (when in reality you have ten kilometers of hellish climb left). But they say it with such conviction and such a genuine smile that, for a moment, you believe it and draw strength from where there is none.

They are the human GPS most reliable (and sometimes the most confusing). You ask them about the yellow arrow and, instead of directing you directly, they give you a master class in local geography: "Look, when you get to Grandpa Ramiro's fountain, the one whose pipe has been broken since it rained hard in '98, you turn right. But don't get lost, because first there is Pili's house, the one with the most beautiful red geraniums in the town, you know? After the Pili, you will see a cruzeiro… and if you don't see it, you have missed it. And you, with your head nodding, but your brain short-circuiting.
But his wisdom goes beyond signage. They are the custodians of the anecdotes, the oral historians, the ones who tell you what the Camino was like "when this was all mountains and one passed every month." And they always have advice, a warning: "Don't go there alone", "Be careful with the wild boars at night", "Here, the water from the fountain is the best, not like the bottled one." And, of course, the most valuable information of all: "There is no bar here". Said with a seriousness and resignation that makes your blood run cold after dreaming about a cold beer for hours.
The best part is their hospitality without asking for anything in return. A glass of fresh water at the door, a smile that lifts your soul, a conversation that disconnects you from fatigue. They are the true "guardian angels" of the Camino, those who remind you that, beyond the kilometers and the Compostela, this journey is about people, unexpected encounters and the magic that resides in simplicity.
So, next time you see one of these town wise men, stop in. Listen to them. Laugh with them. Because they are an essential part of the experience, a living treasure that makes the Camino de Santiago It is much more than a path: it is a home in each town, with grandparents who seem straight out of a story.
