The emotional story of "Santi", the feline that found a home on the Jacobean route
The Camino de Santiago once again demonstrates that it is much more than a pilgrimage route. Between unexpected encounters, stories of overcoming and unforgettable moments, a new story has conquered social networks and the hearts of thousands of people: that of a small cat who decided to follow a pilgrim for more than 15 kilometers and ended up finding a forever family.
It all started in the Lugo town of Palas de Rei, one of the busiest points of the French Way. Julio, a young pilgrim who was making the last stages towards Santiago de Compostela, encountered a small stray cat when leaving the town towards Melide. What seemed like a simple coincidence quickly transformed into a surprising story of friendship.

From the first moment, the animal began to follow the walker. Not only did she walk behind him, but she constantly sought his company, came to rest next to him and even climbed on top of him during stops. As the kilometers progressed, it was evident that this cat had no intention of being left behind.
For approximately 15 kilometers, the small feline traveled along paths, forests and rural tracks typical of the Camino de Santiago between Palas de Rei and Melide. The situation led the pilgrim to consider an unusual decision during a pilgrimage: temporarily interrupt his trip to guarantee the well-being of the animal.
Finally, Julio decided to take care of the cat. She took him to a veterinary clinic, where he received health care, and purchased a carrier and the necessary accessories to continue the trip safely. The feline was baptized "Santi", a very appropriate name for a companion found on the Camino de Santiago.
The story went viral after the pilgrim shared his experience on social networks. Thousands of users highlighted the gesture of empathy and responsibility shown during the pilgrimage. Many noted that the story reflects some of the deepest values associated with the Camino: solidarity, hospitality and the ability to help those in need, even when it is an unexpected four-legged companion.
Beyond the anecdote, the case has served to remind us of the presence of numerous abandoned animals in rural areas of Galicia and the importance of responsible adoption. What began as just another stage of the Camino ended up becoming an experience that changed the lives of both the pilgrim and the little cat.
On a Camino where each pilgrim looks for something different, Julio found an unexpected friendship. And Santi found something even more important: a home.
