Camí or Party? Santiago Residents Are Losing Patience

Per centuries, pilgrims havien guanyat a Santiago de Compostel·la seeking faith, forgiveness, reflection, adventure or simply a few days away from ordinary life.

But in 2026, som residents de Santiago asking a rather different question:

Per fer el camí que become a party zone?

Reports publicats aquest summer descriu pilgrims arribant al historic centre shouting, singing, dancing, playing loud music, holding picnics i drinking in public spaces. There have also been complaints sobre people bathing naked in fountains, pitching tents and even using camping stoves around the Praça do Obradoiro.

Yes. A càmping stove.

Enfront d'un most important pilgrimage destinations in Europe.

At som punt, someone apparently looked at el magnificent façade of Santiago Cathedral and thought:

"Lovely. Perfect place to cook dinner."

From spiritual arrival to viral celebration

Most pilgrims still arriba a Santiago exactly as you would expect.

Tireu.

Emocional.

Some cry.

Some hug strangers they met hundreds of quilometres earlier.

More than Aquest any ja havien arribat a Santiago 376.000 pelegrins when The Times reporten a les tensions tendència, mentre que aquest any Europa Press descriuen thousands walkers filling l'Obradoiro i llargues persones que formen el cathedral.

Més pilgrims són good news for hotels, restaurants, shops and thousands de business along the routes.

But success has consequences.

And Santiago is beginning to feel them.

“L'Obradoiro s'ha convertit en un càmping”

Residents interviewen per Espanyol mitjana ha complaïnat que la main quadern i les estretes de l'històric centre són increasingly being treated als entertainment spaces rather than living neighbourhood.

One juliol reporta descriu complaints sobre persones amb pícnics, píquins d'alcohol i bathing naked in public fountains, s residents saying the Obradoiro becoming a kind of camping area.

Altres locals tenen spoken publicly sobre pilgrims stripping off in square and disturbing residents with noise.

Nobody és suggesting que els pilgrims should reach Santiago in complete silence, walking in single file while Gregorian chants play in the background.

Finishing the Camino deserves celebration.

After 100, 300, 800 or even 1,000 quilòmetres, hugging your companions, laughing, taking photographs o opening a bottle to celebrate is hardly a crime.

But there is a difference between celebrant an arrival and behaving as though the historic centre de Santiago were a festival campsite.

The Camino has changed

The Camí de Sant Jaume is experiencing extraordinary popularity.

Aquests successos han made the routes més internacionals, més accessibles i economicalment importants en hundreds of towns.

It has also produced something increasingly visible:

the Camí as entertainment.

The Camino as challenge.

The Camino as social-media content.

The Camino as bachelor-party atmosfère.

And sometimes the Camí as a stage where the objective seems less about reaching Santiago and more about attracting attention while doing it.

No hi ha aquestes means que són mètical golden age when every pilgrim was a medieval monk walking barefoot in absolute silence.

Pilgrims have always eaten, drunk, laughed and celebrated.

Però scale is different now.

And scale changes everything.

You do not need to be religious to respect Santiago

This is perhaps the most important point.

El Camí no està reservat per Catholics.

You do not have to believe in Saint James.

You do not need to attend Mass.

You do not even need to descriu yourself as a pilgrim.

Millions walk because they love nature, history, culture, friendship or simply the challenge.

Without it, there would be no yellow arrows, no pilgrim credentials, no Compostela and probably no global Camí phenomenon as we know it today.

Respecting that does not require faith.

It requeris only a little common sense.

Santiago is not Disneyland

Aquest mai be the uncomfortable conversation the Camino now needs.

The huge popularity of the routes is worth celebrating.

People actually live in Santiago.

They sleep there.

They work there.

The Camino belongs to pilgrims.

But Santiago also belongs to Santiago.

Perhaps the simplest rule is also the oldest one on the entire route:

walk through someone else's home as you would want them to walk through yours.

Celebrate when you reach the Obradoiro.

Cry.

Laugh.

Take the photograph you have been imagining per 500 quilòmetres.

Hug everyone.

You have earned it.

Però maiy leave tent, loudspeaker i camping stove for somewhere else.

Bon Camí. And good manners.
