Tingues anys after receiving official recollida as a Jacobean route, les testes figures show that its growth is continuing.

Més de 2,400 pilgrims han recollit la Compostel·la per fer el camí d'Hivern per fer el 2026, representant un increment del 16% compared with the same period in 2025.

Les figures eren il·luminades durant esdeveniments marcant l'anniversary official recognition of the route.

Almost four in ten pilgrims are international

Around 39% dels pilgrims completen el route in 2026 have come from outside Spain.

Per a international pilgrims, the Camí d'Hivern ofers a very different experience from the busiest sections of the Camino Francès.

It crosses landscapes associated with El Bierzo and Galicia per passing through areas such as Valdeorras, Ribeira Sacra and Deza on the way towards Santiago.

Why is it called the Winter Way?

Its name comes from its historical role as an alternative route into Galícia.

Traditionally, travellers could use this itinerary to avoid som les difficult hores condicions around the higher sections leading towards O Cebreiro.

The route leaves the Camí Francès around Ponferrada and continues towards Galícia through a different landscape.

That historical origin remains one of its strongest attractions today.

However, the name can sometimes confuse modern pilgrims.

El Camí d'Hivern és not route que should only walked in winter. In fact, it can be enjoyed during different seasons and has increasingly attracted pilgrims looking for quieter alternative during periods when other Camins become molt busier.

Tingues years of steady growth

The route received official recognition in 2016.

Since then, pilgrim numbers have generalment followed an upward trend.

Growth was interrupted by the pandemic in 2020, while 2025 was affected by per seriós summer wildfires que hit parts de north-western Spain.

Acomiada those interruptions, interest in the route has continuat to increase.

Separa't figures compiled around the tenth anniversary indicate that almés 24,000 pilgrims dels dotzens of nationalities haveu travelled el Camí d'Hivern durant el seu first decade as officially recollida route.

It remains small compared with the Camino Francès or the Portuguese routes, però és precisament part d'its appeal.

A quieter Camí

The Camino de Santiago is experiencing another year of strong overall numbers.

El Camí Francès continues per accedir a la llarga share, mentre que el Portuguese Way and Portuguese Coastal Way té grown strongly in recent years.

Against that background, smaller routes such as the Camí d'Hivern offer another possibility.

For some pilgrims, choosing a quieter route means fewer queues, less pressure on accommodation and longer periods of walking alone.

Infrastructure is also improving

Improvements have also been planned for the municipal hostel in A Rúa.

Infrastructure matters particularly on smaller Camins.

A beautiful route mai attract pilgrims initially, però reliable accommodation, safe road crossings, good signage and accessible information és essencial i sense que això sigui continu.

Ribeira Sacra: one of its attractions great

One of the strongest reasons to discover the Camí d'Hivern is the landscape.

Itinerary passos mitjançant Ribeira Sacra, area famosa per dramatic river valleys, vineyards planted on steep slopes, monestirs i centuries of cultural history.

Aquests gestionen el route a la característica que és molt diferent de les sections of the Camino Francés.

Per a international visitors especialment, combining pilgrimage with wine culture, Romanesque heritage and rural Galícia can turn the journey into molt more than simply reaching Santiago.

It becomes a way of discovering a territori that many first-time pilgrims know very little about.

Could the Camí d'Hivern become the next international route?

Aquests números remain modest, i que s'hauria be kept in perspective.

Pilgrims és increasingly searching for alternatives.

Some have already completed the Camí Francès and want a second experience. Altres deliberately avoid the busiest routes from the beginning.

The Camí d'Hivern fits both profiles.

It has history, spectacular landscapes, a strong connection with Galicia i enough infrastructura per a fer journey increasingly accessible sense yet feeling overwhelmed by mass tourism.

Ten years old — and still being discovered

The anniversary arriba a l'interesting moment.

Tingues anys after official recognition, the Camí d'Hivern is no longer an unknown route.

Però neither ha it elst the sense of discovery que els atractius many pilgrims to lesser-travelled Camins.

That balance may prove to be its greatest advantage.

Because sometimes the most memorable Camí no és un everybody chooses.

It is the one you discover just before everybody else does.
