Yellow arrows: the most insistent navigation system

Yellow arrows: the most insistent navigation system

Unofficial manual to understand how someone can go astray... even if the path is literally painted with yellow arrows

In it Camino de Santiago There is a phenomenon worthy of anthropological, psychological and, why not say it, humorous study: the yellow arrows. Those mythical, omnipresent, insistent and almost maternal signs that tell you “this way, darling.” And yet... there are people who get lost.

Yes. It is lost. A lot.

Yellow Arrows: Europe's most insistent navigation system

The yellow arrows are not simple marks. They are a state of mind. They are on walls, stones, trees, posts, floors, curbs, streetlights and, if neglected, on the forehead of some absent-minded pilgrim.

There are sections where you see three arrows at a time, all pointing to exactly the same place, as if the path said:
"I'll explain it to you again... just in case."

And yet, someone always appears who assures with total conviction:
—I just didn't see any signs.

The modern pilgrim and his internal struggle with the evidence

Here a classic of the Camino comes into play: the pilgrim who trust your intuition more than the arrow. The arrow points to the left, but he feels that his spiritual destination is to the right… towards a meadow with cows.

Another common profile is that of the technological pilgrim. It has a mobile phone, GPS, app, smart watch and external battery. The yellow arrow says one thing, the app another, and he decides to follow... the man in front, who doesn't know where he's going either.

Result: two hours later, both are in an industrial estate asking a man on a tractor where Santiago is.

When getting lost “is also part of the Camino”

For many, getting lost is not a mistake, it is a mystical experience.
—The Camino takes you where you have to go., they say, as they retrace their steps with a hungry face and new blisters.

There are those who argue that deviating strengthens the spirit, the legs and the ability to improvise excuses. Others simply accept that they walked the extra 8 kilometers “for personal growth.”

Of course, when the yellow arrow reappears, they look at it with a mixture of relief and resentment, as if to say:
“Ah, you were there all the time…”

Arrows painted, carved, glued... and still invisible

The funny thing is that no one misses the first day. The problem comes when the brain goes into “automatic mode.” You walk, you think about life, about dinner, about why you decided to do this... and suddenly you haven't seen an arrow for half an hour.

Spoiler: the arrow was there. It was always there. You weren't looking.

Conclusion: If you get lost, it's not the arrow's fault

The yellow arrows do not fail. We fail.
They fulfill their mission with infinite patience, under rain, sun and poorly framed selfies. If someone gets lost on the Camino de Santiago, it is not because of a lack of signage, it is because of excess human confidence.

But don't worry: getting lost, laughing about it and telling it later is also part of the Camino. Of course... next time, look at the arrow. He's trying to help you.
