The Pilgrim's Backpack: Your Best Friend… and Your Worst Nightmare
Ah, the backpack! That faithful companion who, at the beginning of the Camino, seems like an extension of your own body, full of dreams and clean socks. But don't fool yourself, pilgrim, because that same backpack will become, kilometer after kilometer, a being with a life of its own, determined to test every fiber of your being and every centimeter of your patience.
At first, you fill it with the devotion of a craftsman: “this is essential,” “this will come in handy,” “just in case!” You pack the raincoat, three pairs of socks, the guidebook, the first aid kit, the camera, a book, the silk pajamas (because who knows), and that mini-speaker to liven up the scene. You try it, you jump around... perfect!

The Pilgrim's Backpack: Your Best Friend... and Your Worst Nightmare: But the sun is shining, the slope never ends, and your backpack, suddenly, has transformed into a woolly mammoth loaded with bricks. Every step is an “Oh, my back!”, every adjustment of straps a “Please someone take this off!” You discover that those extra pants weigh like a gold bar and that the solid shampoo, although ecological, seems to be made of lead.
That's when the internal negotiation begins: "Do I really need this electric toothbrush or can I settle for a twig?", "Is this second shirt essential or can I turn yesterday's shirt inside out and hide it?", "My favorite shower gel or a bar of multipurpose soap that can do everything, including washing my dignity?" And so, little by little, you become a master of material detachment, throwing things into town trash cans as if they were cursed relics.
At the end of the Camino, your backpack is not an object, it is an extension of your hardened soul. It's stained with mud, smells like "accumulated effort," and its straps are the perfect shape of your aching shoulders. But, seeing it empty in the Obradoiro, you feel a strange mixture of relief and nostalgia. Because, despite everything, that heavy burden has accompanied you in every step of an unforgettable adventure. And yes, next time, you swear you'll only bring one toothbrush... and a bamboo one!
Buen Camino and may your backpack be lighter than your sorrows!
