Asturias bets on the gastronomy of the Camino

ASTURIAS – Gastronomy wants to become one of the great attractions of the Camino de Santiago as it passes through Asturias. That is the objective of the Academy of Gastronomy of the Caminos de Santiago of the Principality of Asturias, an initiative that seeks to highlight the culinary wealth of the region as an essential part of the pilgrims' experience.

Your president, Carlos M. Guardado, assures that Asturias has an enormous gastronomic variety that surprises those who travel the Primitive Path and the North Road, two of the Jacobean routes with the greatest growth in national and international pilgrims.

According to Guardado, gastronomy should not be understood only as a service for those who make the pilgrimage, but as a fundamental part of the Asturian cultural identity. Each dish, each local product and each traditional recipe tell a story that complements the journey to Santiago de Compostela.

The academy was born with the purpose of uniting gastronomy, tourism and the Camino de Santiago to promote the economic development of the towns through which the Jacobean routes pass. The intention is to promote collaboration between restaurants, cider houses, producers, chefs, town councils and Camino associations to offer a more complete experience to pilgrims.

Asturias has a gastronomic heritage recognized inside and outside of Spain. Products like Asturian bean stew, artisan cheeses, Asturian beef, Cantabrian fish and seafood, traditional sausages and, of course, the asturian cider, are part of a culinary offer that conquers thousands of visitors every year.

Many pilgrims claim that one of the great surprises of the Camino through Asturias is precisely the quality of its cuisine. After a long day walking, discovering a menu made with local products becomes an experience that remains in your memory as much as the landscapes or historical heritage.

For the Academy of Gastronomy, the Camino de Santiago represents a unique opportunity to introduce local products to travelers from more than a hundred countries. Each pilgrim who sits in a restaurant, buys an artisanal cheese or visits a cider house contributes directly to the economy of small towns that live, in large part, on Jacobean tourism.

In addition to the economic impact, gastronomy helps preserve centuries-old traditions passed down from generation to generation. Many recipes that pilgrims taste today have centuries of history and are part of the cultural heritage of the Principality.

Guardado believes that the future lies in integrating gastronomy even more into the offer of the Camino de Santiago. The objective is that pilgrims not only remember Asturias for its mountains, its forests or its coast, but also for the flavors they found during their journey.

The constant growth of Primitive Path and of North Road turns Asturias into a strategic destination for international tourism. Every year thousands of walkers arrive, attracted by the natural beauty of these routes, declared UNESCO World Heritage, and now it is also intended that gastronomy is another of the great reasons for choosing them.

The Academy works to promote Asturian cuisine as a differentiating element within the Camino de Santiago, convinced that the pilgrim's experience does not end at the end of a stage, but continues around a shared table.

Because in Asturias, the Camino is also savored. And for many pilgrims, discovering its traditional cuisine ends up being one of the best memories of an adventure that unites culture, nature, hospitality and good gastronomy.
