THE LEGEND OF THE ROOSTER AND THE HEN

THE LEGEND OF THE ROOSTER AND THE HEN OF SANTO DOMINGO DE LA CALZADA

In the days when the Camino de Santiago was a dangerous adventure and the inns were as important as the churches, a family of German pilgrims set out on a journey to Compostela with their only son. They crossed mountains, rivers and villages following the shells and stars, trusting that the apostle would protect them along the way.

Upon arriving at the town of Santo Domingo de la Calzada, tired and with broken feet, they decided to stay at an inn near the road. The owner of the place, upon seeing the boy, fell in love with him and tried to seduce him. The young man, educated and fearing God, rejected his advances. The woman, wounded in her pride, swore revenge.

During the night, he hid a silver cup among the pilgrim's belongings and the next morning he publicly accused him of theft. The boy was arrested without anyone believing his version. In those times, the word of an innkeeper was worth more than that of a foreign pilgrim, and the young man was sentenced to death by hanging.

His parents, devastated, could do nothing to save him. Forced to continue on their way, they continued towards Santiago with a broken heart, praying for the soul of their son and asking the apostle for justice.

Santo Domingo de la Calzada

Upon returning from Compostela, they decided to take a detour to see the boy's body before returning to their homeland. When they arrived at the scaffold, they found him hanging... but alive. The young man spoke to them in a weak voice and told them that he had not died because Santo Domingo de la Calzada was holding him with his own hands, preventing the rope from suffocating him.

They then ran to the town magistrate to tell him what had happened. The judge, who was about to sit down at the table to eat a roasted rooster and hen, mocked them and replied that their son was as alive as those already cooked birds.

At that same moment, according to tradition, the rooster rose from the plate and crowed, and the hen came to life and crowed. The judge, astonished, ordered the boy to be taken off the hook immediately and recognized his innocence.

From that day, Santo Domingo de la Calzada was forever linked to this miracle. In its cathedral the tradition of having a rooster and a hen as a memory of that prodigy is kept alive, and pilgrims have since repeated the famous saying:

“Santo Domingo de la Calzada, where the hen sang after being roasted.”

This legend became one of the best-known of the Camino de Santiago because it brings together all its essential elements: injustice, faith, punishment and forgiveness. It is also a reminder that the Camino is not just a physical journey, but an inner path where each step can change a destiny.

For centuries, pilgrims have passed through Santo Domingo not only to seal their credentials, but to contemplate the live animals inside the cathedral and remember that, on the Camino, the impossible is also allowed to happen. The story was transmitted by word of mouth, from walker to walker, becoming one of the great narratives of the Jacobean imagination.

Today, whoever passes through this town feels that they are not only crossing a town, but an entire chapter in the history of the Camino. Because each stone of Santo Domingo seems to repeat the same teaching: on the route to Santiago there are injustices, there are falls and there are betrayals, but there are also second chances, unexpected miracles and justice when everything seems lost.

Thus, the rooster and the hen are not just animals in a cage, but symbols of hope for those who advance with a backpack full of fatigue and questions. And as long as there are pilgrims walking towards Compostela, this legend will continue to live, remembering that the Camino de Santiago is not just a journey... it is a place where even the dead can sing again.
