The Pilgrims' Tattoo Artist Who Has Never Walked the Road

Thousands of pilgrims complete the Camino de Santiago every year searching for faith, healing, adventure or personal transformation. Many of them choose to take home a lasting reminder of their journey — not in a backpack, but on their skin.

In Santiago de Compostela, one tattoo artist has become a legend among pilgrims from around the world. The surprising part? He has never walked the Camino himself.

At 39 years old, Ethan Clay, originally from Ecuador, has spent nearly two decades living in Galicia, where he has built a reputation as "the tattoo artist of the pilgrims." What started as a passion for tattooing has evolved into an unexpected connection with the stories of those who arrive in Santiago after days, weeks or even months on the road.

Pilgrims often request classic Camino symbols such as the scallop shell, the yellow arrow, backpacks or the word "Ultreia." Others book appointments months in advance to create deeply personal designs inspired by their own experiences along the route.

For Ethan, however, the tattoo itself is only part of the process.

"It's not just about the tattoo, but the story behind it," he explains.

Among the many memories he treasures is that of a woman who completed the Camino with her siblings after losing their father. Following his final wish, they scattered his ashes at Finisterre. She later asked Ethan to tattoo a robin — a bird she believed had become a symbol of her father's presence after his passing.

As the popularity of Camino tattoos has grown, so has Ethan's business. The demand from international pilgrims has increased so much that he has expanded his operations in Santiago. Italians, Germans, Mexicans and Americans are among those seeking what many call "the final stamp of the Camino."

Ironically, despite helping thousands of people preserve their Camino memories forever, Ethan himself has never walked the famous pilgrimage route.

Perhaps that is what makes his story so unique. As pilgrims leave Santiago carrying tattoos that symbolize the end of a journey, Ethan remains at the destination — quietly becoming part of countless Camino stories without ever taking the first step.

For many pilgrims, the Camino changed their lives. For Ethan Clay, it changed his profession into something far more meaningful: turning memories, grief, gratitude and personal victories into permanent works of art.
